Danby Castle is a historic wedding venue which sits proudly on the edge of the stunning North Yorkshire moors. Featuring a 14th century castle ruin, a rustic barn reception room and breathtaking North York Moors views, this is a truly unique venue packed with character.

I shot my first Danby Castle wedding in 2016 and since then it has evolved dramatically under the ownership of The Gilchrist Collection. The improvements have been incredible, yet it has retained its charm and natural beauty. I am lucky enough to be a recommended supplier of Danby Castle and shoot weddings here often. This is a wedding venue I will always have a lot of love for and am constantly recommending to anyone looking for a venue that’s full of character and beauty.

An overview of Danby Castle

Danby Castle can be found just outside the quaint village of Danby, North Yorkshire. It’s nestled on a large hill overlooking the beautiful Esk Valley and offers panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside.

The venue itself is centred around the 14th century castle ruin which is the perfect setting for romantic couples portraits. It also has a 16th century courtroom which houses ceremonies and a spacious lawned area from which guests can enjoy the spectacular views. The reception room is a large yet cosy barn with an adjoining bar and dance floor for the evening do.

Overall, the venue has a welcoming and intimate feel about it and is bursting with character. With exclusive use of the whole premises, guests are free to enjoy all the different areas Danby has to offer at their will leisure.

There’s something about Danby Castle which makes it quite unique from other wedding venues. The atmosphere of this place is so relaxed and friendly and the weddings here are always special.

Wedding day mornings at Danby Castle

Another venue with a beautiful getting ready room! If you’ve read my other posts, you’ll know that I love venues which have a getting ready room for their brides. For me they are the perfect place for all the bridal preparations and pre wedding fun! They have everything you need and always create a lovely relaxed atmosphere… I can’t vouch for getting ready at the venue in a getting ready room enough!

Danby Castle’s getting ready room is modern, spacious, comfortable and of course bright. The perfect setting for the hair and make-up and those pre ceremony photos . It has a large hair and makeup station, full length mirror and of course ample space to hang those dresses.

Wedding mornings here are an absolute joy to photograph. When I’m driving across the scenic North York Moors en route to a Danby Castle wedding, I know the bridal prep is going to be amazing here.

Ceremonies at Danby Castle

When it comes to the ceremony at Danby Castle couples are spoilt for choice and have multiple options available to them.

The Courtroom is the main ceremony room and can hold up to 90 guests. This space is full of character and history and has a warming, rustic feel about it. I particularly enjoy ceremonies in the Courtroom. It’s just the right size to create an intimate atmosphere where the guests feel a part of the ceremony itself.

For larger weddings, the barn is a great option. The barn can hold up to 110 guests. This space has authentic wooden beams, original 14th century stonework, a varnished wooden floor and even a real wood-burning stove. The barn is beautiful as it is but can be personalised and dressed however the couple wish.

If you’ve always dreamed of getting married outside, Danby Castle has this covered. The stunning panoramic views of the Esk Valley provide the most amazing backdrop for a wedding ceremony. Outdoor ceremonies at Danby Castle are simply stunning and create a truly unique experience for the couple and their guests.

I’ve photographed ceremonies in all three of the ceremony spaces at Danby Castle and genuinely love them all. Having these options available allows couples to have their wedding the way they they want it, making it special for them and their guests.

Welcome Drinks

Welcome drinks don’t get much better than at Danby Castle. On a fine summers day there’s nowhere better to enjoy a post ceremony drink and a few canapés than the outdoor space on offer here.

This place always has a fizzling atmosphere, especially with some live music thrown in. Guests can explore the ruins or just soak up the views. It’s impossible not to have a good time here and everyone always does!

It’s during the welcome drinks that I like to do family photos and couples portraits and with everything been within close proximity at Danby, this is made easy. I can easily sneak the groups and couple off whilst everyone else enjoys themselves which is fantastic.

Another great thing about the welcome drinks here is that there’s ample space for any additions such as musicians, ice cream trucks, children’s play tipis or lawn games etc. I’ve seen so many great uses of the outdoor space at Danby which can really add to a wedding day.

The wedding breakfast

Wedding breakfasts are always epic at Danby castle. As one of the most important elements of a wedding day this is super important. In keeping with the rest of the venue the barn has a very homely, warm feeling about it and the atmosphere is always very relaxed. This makes it the perfect environment for a celebratory meal.

Whether the Speeches are before or after the meal they are always fantastic here. The couple generally sit on the top table which is slightly raised from everywhere else and this is the perfect spot for the speeches.

In terms of the food on offer, the menu is vast and they often host tasting evenings for couples with upcoming weddings. Having done my fair share of Danby weddings I’ve worked my way through the menu and the food and service are always fantastic.

The Evening Do…

For the evening the barn has an adjoining room which houses a bar, stage and dance floor area. Equipped with an in house sound system and lighting this is the perfect place for a party.

Danby castle can accommodate up to 140 guests on an evening. I’ve seen bands, DJs, ceilidhs, saxophonists and even brass bands Perform in here and it’s always a good party.

One plus of this space being so close to the barn is that guest who aren’t quite ready for the dance floor can still chat and enjoy a drink in the barn area. As well as this the bar flows to an outside space full of seating overlooking the valley which is perfect on a warm summers evening.

Danby Castle – Photographers POV

I’ve mentioned a few times that there is something special about Danby Castle and I really mean it. It’s difficult to explain, but for me, it has such a natural and authentic feel. I’d be doing the amazing team at Danby a disservice using the word effortless, but weddings here kind of are!

The relaxed and friendly atmosphere here coupled with the stunning setting produce weddings with a vibe which is only found at Danby. What’s more is that the couples who choose this venue seem to reflect that laid back and easy going nature!

From a wedding photographer’s perspective Danby Castle is a wedding venue that has everything. Not only that, it has everything in abundance and within close proximity. This makes things so much easier for a photographer.

The photographs here are always beautiful and this is testament to the venue and it’s incredible surroundings. You don’t have to go anywhere offsite to get amazing wedding photos as everywhere you look is naturally beautiful. There is even the stunning North Yorkshire Moorland just a five minute drive away if you do fancy a venture.

It’s the natural beauty and character which really make this place stand out for me and how it sits so seamlessly in the landscape. You may not find perfectly manicured gardens or contrived photo opportunities here, but you will find a venue which is genuinely beautiful wherever you look.
