SNEATON CASTLE WHITBY – NORTH YORKSHIRE WEDDING VENUE

As a Whitby based wedding photographer, I am lucky enough to have one of North Yorkshire’s most beautiful wedding venues right on my doorstep. Sneaton Castle is owned and run by a Whitby farming family who are passionate about providing from their own farm and other fantastic hand picked local suppliers. The service provided, quality of produce and attention to detail throughout is second to none and it’s clear they take pride in everything they offer. The venue itself is visually stunning. From the iconic chapel to the majestic castle building, it is a photographers dream. An overview of Sneaton Castle

Sneaton Castle is situated on the outskirts of the popular coastal town Whitby, North Yorkshire. The stunning chapel, priory and iconic castle sit proudly overlooking the town and stand within a rural Yorkshire landscape. Nestled between the North Sea and the North Yorkshire Moors, this venue is the perfect location for any couples looking for a dream wedding.

The castle was purchased by the Morley family (previous owners of The Stables, Whitby) in 2019. Prior to this it was residence for the Sisters of the Holy Paraclete for over 100 years. Since the takeover, I have watched it develop into one of Yorkshires finest and most popular wedding venues. The transformation has been remarkable and it’s easy to see why couples fall in love with it.

Wedding day mornings at Sneaton Castle

The option to stay over at the castle on the eve of the wedding is available to couples at Sneaton Castle. The accommodation is luxurious, modern and comfortable. Typically the bride and her bridesmaids stay in the Dovecote Suite which has two spacious bedrooms and its own purpose built getting ready room. This provides a perfect environment for the bride and her bridesmaids to get ready in for the big day. It’s a bright, spacious area which is full of natural light, making it ideal for the bridal prep and pre-ceremony photographs.

As I’ve mentioned before, I love venues which provide a getting ready room for their brides. Having the option to prepare for the big day at the venue is so convenient and can alleviate any logistical niggles which can occur in the flurry of a wedding morning. As well as this it adds to the whole experience of the day. Breakfast and drinks are delivered to the bridal party upon request and the friendly team are always on hand to help. Wedding mornings at Sneaton Castle always have a fun and relaxed atmosphere and this sets the tone for the rest of the wedding.

Ceremonies in the Chapel

Wedding ceremonies at Sneaton Castle take place in its very own chapel. This is one of my favourite spaces to shoot a ceremony in. It is simply stunning. I often watch wedding guests as they enter the chapel for the first time and their reaction says it all. It’s a breathtaking space with a beautiful ambience about it. The hand painted ceiling mural and floral archway at the end of the aisle creates an iconic scene for so many beautiful ceremonies. It is a vast space with a high ceiling and large windows which really does have a wow factor.

The Chapel can hold up to 130 guests but also provides the perfect setting for a smaller and more intimate ceremony. I’ve shot weddings here with just 20 guests right through to 130 and I can tell you first hand That the ambience is always special.

Ceremonies in the chapel are beautiful. From the brides dramatic entrance to the first kiss, they’re always full of special moments. When I talk with my Sneaton Castle couples, they often tell me that the chapel was one of the main reasons they booked this venue. It’s easy to see why they fall in love with it. I can imagine that after seeing the chapel at Sneaton Castle, it’s difficult to think about having your ceremony anywhere else.

Welcome Drinks

As at all weddings, the celebrations really begin after the ceremony at Sneaton Castle. The grounds of the castle are the most enchanting of scenes for the newlyweds to celebrate with guests. After a confetti tunnel with a castle backdrop, guests are treated to welcome drinks, canapés and of course the picturesque surroundings which are stunning all year round.

The Horseshoe bar provides a light and airy interior space for guests and a walled garden and vast lawn are ideal for those warm summer weddings. There’s an abundance of open space overlooked by the impressive castle. Ideal for both adults and children alike.

The family group photos and couples portraits are always beautiful at Sneaton Castle. With exclusive use of the rear grounds of the castle, photographers are spoilt for choice.

The wedding breakfast

As touched upon earlier, the food at Sneaton Castle is special. For me, a few things are synonymous with this venue. The stunning architecture and fairytale features has to be one. The cuisine on offer is definitely another. couples and wedding guests are spoilt when it comes the wedding meals here. The options are fantastic as well. The most lavish and immersive afternoon tea always goes down well and the three course castle banquet is literally fit for a king. Shout out to Sneaton and its staff, they go above and beyond when it comes to looking after wedding vendors. I’m always spoilt when working here!

I can’t not mention the hall in which the wedding breakfasts are served at Sneaton. Guests are welcomed through a gynormous wooden double door fitting of a castle. The room itself is always dressed immaculately and is styled in a way which reflects the couples personalities. This space is so dynamic and I’ve seen it styled in so many different ways. It’s also a great space for the speeches as the top table can be seen from the entire room.

Party at the Castle

A good wedding needs a good party and Sneaton Castle certainly delivers here. With a purpose built area for a band or Dj, a large open dance floor and the conjoined Horseshoe bar area it’s the perfect set up for a good party. Whether it’s a band, DJ, saxophonist or ceilidh, Sneaton Castle can accommodate all types of evening entertainment. There’s also plenty of space for any extras such photo booths, sweet carts, casino tables etc. Guests are treated again to more of the venues fantastic food in the evening. Whitby’s famous fish and chips are always a popular option with both guests and photographers alike!

A photographer’s POV of Sneaton Castle

For couples getting married here it’s a fairytale wedding venue and for photographers it is a dream. For me, there’s a few factors which make a venue a joy to work at at Sneaton Castle certainly has them.

When arriving to shoot a wedding here I know the day is going to flow well. The team here are full of knowledge and experience and having shot dozens of weddings here it really shows. From bridal prep in the morning right through the first dance the day is managed discreetly by the staff in the background. This allows the bride and groom and all their guests to truly enjoy their celebrations without having to think about anything other than having a good day! This makes a huge difference for the photographer and all wedding vendors.

In terms of the photographers experience and the work I’m able to produce for my couples at Sneaton Castle, it’s one of the very best. The locations, surroundings, features and logistics at every stage of the day make shooting weddings here so enjoyable and rewarding. Every part of the day is great for the photographer from a visual as well as logistical perspective.
