Woodland engagement photoshoot

Laura & Jake

Why have an engagement photoshoot?

Laura & Jake chose to have an engagement photoshoot before their big day and I’m so pleased they did. Pre-wedding shoots are great for a few reasons. They give us the opportunity to meet and chat about the big day. Allow us to get to know each other and get comfortable around the camera. Give an insight into how I’ll work on the wedding day and of course let us capture some beautiful photographs. As well as all that they’re also always super fun… I can’t recommend them enough and suggest them to all my couples.

I suggested the locations for this shoot as I knew Laura & Jake were bringing their dogs. Ideally I wanted a few contrasting locations to create a mix of photos. Sandsend Beach and Mulgrave Woods was the perfect choice. They’re close to one another and gave us the perfect settings for some lovely photos. The beach and woods are my favourite locations for couples shoots, so to be able to combine both was amazing. I think Maggie & Stella (the dogs) approved too!

With the tide rolling in fast we started at the beach whilst it was still there. This was in November, it was a bit nippy, the wind was up and the sea was rough but that didn’t stop us from getting some great shots. The cold actually helped here as Laura & Jake had an extra incentive to get close and snuggle up, not that they needed it! I love the photos we captured on the beach. Yes they’re a little windswept but I think it just adds to the atmosphere and story. You can see just how much Laura & Jake embraced everything and ironically these photos have a real warmth to them. The minimal landscape of the beach is also a great contrast to the woodland shots which are bursting with colour and texture.

Into the woods

After braving the beach we ventured into the woods where there was barely any of wind at all. Whilst walking through the woods it was great to hear more about Laura and Jake’s wedding plans. They’re getting married at Danby Castle, in North Yorkshire in Spring time. Danby Castle is one of my favourite wedding venues and I’m proud to be one of their recommended photographers. It was also fantastic to get to know the couple a bit before the big day. For me it’s always a positive to get to know one another and for a couple to get a feel for how I will work on their wedding day. After all on a wedding day the couple spend a lot of time with their photographer, so knowing what to expect is always a good thing.

Despite been late November the colours were still amazing and it was the perfect autumnal backdrop for the rest of the shoot. We walked, talked and got some stunning photos on the way. Hats off to Laura and Jake, they were very natural in front of the camera and it shows. Maggie and Stella were amazing too and we couldn’t resist a few solo portraits of the doggos.

I approach my pre-wedding shoots in the same way I do for the portraits at a wedding. I keep things natural, incorporate a lot of movement and tend to prompt rather than pose my couple. This hands off, laid back style lets the couples personalities shine through in the photos, this certainly worked with these two.

Needless to say we had a great time on this shoot and any apprehension about being in front of the camera soon evaporated. I genuinely can’t wait for Laura & Jake’s wedding at Danby Castle next Spring, I already know it’s going to be a good one!

If you’re considering an engagement photoshoot of even just a couple shoot, I would highly recommend it. Not only for the photos, but also for the experience. You won’t regret it! You can find out more about my prices for shoots below.
